TISHA B'AV:
Day of Misfortune

Many remarkable events have happened in the history of God’s people. And much of God’s timing in these events has been, to say the least, interesting. No date is a better indication of this than the ninth day of Av (fifth month of the Jewish lunar calendar—usually falls around July/August).

No fewer than eight important events have occurred on this day, causing it to be remembered as TSOM TISHA B’AV (Fast of the 9th of Av). That eight major events of the same nature would occur on the same anniversary date is unprecedented in the history of the nations. The following milestones in Israel’s history all occurred on the ninth of Av:

1. The people on hearing the report from the twelve spies began to weep and complain about being taken out of Egypt. God declared “You wept without cause, therefore I will make this day an eternal day of mourning for you.”

2. The destruction of Solomon’s Temple by Babylon. According to Jeremiah 52:5-24, the city of Jerusalem was besieged and the Temple burned by the Babylonians around 587 B.C.E.

3. The destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in 70 C.E. The attack on Jerusalem began on the Feast of Passover when a huge number of pilgrims came to Jerusalem to celebrate and were caught by the encircling Roman Legions. On the 9th of Av, the city was seized, and against General Titus’ order, the Temple was destroyed (fulfilling the prophecy of Daniel 9:26).

4. The Roman army plowed Jerusalem under with salt...exactly one year after burning the Temple...thus fulfilling the prophecy of Micah 3:12.

5. Simeon Bar Kochba was a dynamic Jewish leader proclaimed by some to be the Messiah. For two years he and his followers were successful in repelling the Romans. However, on the 9th of Av, 135 C.E., 65 years after the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem, another rebellion against Rome ended in trajedy for the Jews.

6. On July 18, 1290, the 9th of Av, King Edward ordered the expulsion of all Jews from England.

7. Spain expelled all Jews on August 2, 1492, the 9th of Av; the same day that Christopher Columbus left Spain to discover the New World.

8. Russia mobilized for World War I and launched persecutions against the Jews on August 1, 1914, the 9th of Av. That country has persisted in persecuting our people ever since.

Tisha B’Av is marked by strict mourning practices, fasting, sitting on the ground or on a low stool, abstaining from work and business, reading only mournful portions of Scripture like Lamentations and Jeremiah, etc.

If history continues to repeat itself, what will Tisha B’Av bring about this year? As Believers, let us join with the Jewish people everywhere to mourn the great suffering that has befallen the people of Israel for thousands of years. We are the proof that the prophecy of Lamentations is fulfilled...since the Lord has turned us, we are turned! Let us proclaim that for our mourning He will give us joy, and for our sorrow, He will give us laughter. Let us intercede in prayer for all unbelievers, be they Jew or Gentile, to be turned through faith in Messiah Yeshua.
