Counting the Omer

Counting the Omer

Counting the Omer, or Sefirat HaOmer, is the holiday we celebrate starting the evening of the second night of Passover. Each evening we count the day, counting up for seven weeks (or forty-nine days) until we reach the night before the festival of Shavuot.

“Then you are to count from the morrow after the Shabbat, from the day that you brought the omer of the wave offering, seven complete Shabbatot.” (Lev 23:15)

It is traditional to recite the following blessing each evening before counting (ideally at nightfall, but it can be the following morning):

Blessed are You, LORD our G-d, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us concerning the count of the Omer.

After the blessing, then the day is counted. Beginning with Thursday night, April 9, 2020, the counting would be:

“Today is one day of the Omer.”

The counts for the rest of the days of the Counting of the Omer for 2020 (or 5780) follow:
