Being Children of G-d

Being Children of G-d

This last Shabbat, the portion about Sarah’s life was a difficult topic to discuss with the children because it involves talking about death. Usually, as adults, we try to avoid that subject, but in reality every human being will face it sooner or later. Instead of skipping it, we decide to talk about how Adonai gives us comfort during tough times, just as He consoled Isaac by giving him a special wife after his mom died. Similarly, the Ruach ha-kodesh, the Holy Spirit, provided comfort to the disciples after Yeshua ascended to heaven. We can also be confident that His Ruach is with us today, both in good times and in difficult times. The children shared their experiences of losing someone, whether in their own life or someone else’s, and how, in the middle of the pain, we can see G-d’s consolation and how it helps us keep going.

We also introduced a fun game, sitting on our special new quilt that sister Colette made just for us! We tried to memorize our verse, even the teachers had fun playing, and by the end of the game, we all knew the verse by heart. The teachers earned more stickers for their verse book too as the children tested them.

Next portion is Toldot or Generations and the children will be learning about how they too fit into the family of Adonai that we see in the Scriptures. And stay tuned because the following week (Nov 29) we are planning something very unusual.
